The Name of Chuseok and Its Profound Meaning

민족의 큰 명절, 추석이 왔다. 음력 8월 15일인 추석은 설날, 단오, 정월대보름과 함께 우리나라의 4대 명절 중 하나다. 이 날을 부르는 이름에는 풍요와 아름다움의 의미가 가득 담겨 있다.

가장 널리 쓰이는 순우리말인 한가위에서 '한'은 '크다', '가위'는 '가운데'라는 뜻의 옛말이다. 따라서 한가위는 '8월의 한가운데 있는 큰 날'이라는 뜻을 담고 있다. 한자어로는 아름다운 잔칫날이라는 가배일(嘉俳日), 가을의 가운데 명절이라는 중추절(仲秋節)이라고도 불렀다.

추석은 고대 사회부터 이어져 온 '달에 대한 신앙'에서 유래했다는 설이 전해진다. 어둠과 공포의 대상이었던 밤에, 가장 크고 밝은 만월은 인간에게 큰 도움을 주었다. 일 년 중 가장 큰 만월을 이루는 8월 15일은 수확의 시기와 맞물려 자연스레 큰 명절로 자리 잡았다.

특히 신라 제3대 유리왕 9년(서기 32년)에 왕녀 두 사람이 여자들을 두 패로 나누어 7월 16일부터 8월 15일까지 길쌈(옷감 짜기) 대회를 열어 공이 많은 편이 승리하고 진 편이 술과 밥을 장만하여 이긴 편에게 사례했는데, 이를 가배라고 기록한 <삼국사기>의 내용은 추석의 유래를 뒷받침하는 흥미로운 역사다.

[Chuseok, one of Korea’s major traditional holidays, has arrived. Celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, Chuseok is one of the four great Korean holidays alongside Seollal (Lunar New Year), Dano, and Jeongwol Daeboreum. The names used to refer to this day are filled with meanings of abundance and beauty.

The most widely used native Korean term is Hangawi. In this word, Han means “big,” and Gawi is an old word meaning “middle.” Thus, Hangawi signifies “the great day in the middle of August.” In Sino-Korean, it has also been called Gabaeil (嘉俳日), meaning “a beautiful festive day,” and Jungchujeol (仲秋節), meaning “the mid-autumn festival.”

It is believed that Chuseok originated from ancient lunar worship. In times when the night was associated with darkness and fear, the full moon—at its brightest and largest—offered comfort and guidance. The full moon on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, the largest of the year, coincides with the harvest season, naturally becoming a major celebration.

A particularly interesting historical account supporting this origin is found in the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms). In the 9th year of King Yuri, the third ruler of Silla (32 CE), two princesses divided women into two teams and held a weaving contest from the 16th day of the 7th month to the 15th day of the 8th month. The winning team was rewarded by the losing team with food and drink. This event was recorded as Gabae, offering a fascinating glimpse into the roots of Chuseok.]

Gratitude for the Harvest and Wishes Within Songpyeon

추석에는 일 년 동안 기른 곡식을 거둬들인 햇곡식과 햇과일로 조상들에게 차례를 지내고, 조상의 산소에 성묘를 한다. 일 년 농사의 결실을 조상과 자연에 감사하며 나누는 날인 셈이다. 밤이 되면 밝은 달 아래서 강강술래를 하며 풍요를 기원하는 놀이를 즐겼다.

이때 추석의 상징처럼 여겨지는 음식이 바로 송편이다. 송편은 소나무의 솔잎을 깔고 쪄서 만들었는데, 솔잎 덕분에 떡이 서로 엉겨 붙지 않고 향이 배며, 살균 물질인 피톤치드의 효과로 잘 쉬지 않는 이점이 있었다. 조상들은 솔의 정기를 받아 소나무처럼 건강해지기를 염원하며 송편을 빚고 먹었다.

송편의 반달 모양에는 깊은 이야기가 전해진다. 백제 의자왕 시절, 땅속 거북 등에서 발견된 "백제는 만월이요, 신라는 반달이라"는 글귀는 백제가 기울고 신라가 커질 운명을 예언했다. 실제로 신라가 삼국을 통일하면서 이 예언은 현실이 되었다. 이에 우리 선조들은 앞으로 차차 커져서 만월이 될 반달의 모양을 본떠 더 나아지고 발전하는 미래를 염원하며 송편을 빚었다는 이야기가 가장 유력한 유래다. 이는 달 숭배 사상과도 연결되는데, 소를 넣어 접기 전에는 보름달이지만 접으면 반달이 되는 송편 하나에 달의 발전과 변화를 모두 담았다는 의미도 있다.

[During Chuseok, Koreans honor their ancestors by preparing ceremonial offerings with freshly harvested grains and fruits, and by visiting ancestral graves. It is a day to share the fruits of a year’s labor and express gratitude to both ancestors and nature. As night falls, people gather under the bright full moon to perform ganggangsullae, a traditional circle dance that celebrates abundance and prosperity.

One of the most iconic foods of Chuseok is songpyeon, a half-moon-shaped rice cake. It is steamed over layers of pine needles, which prevent the cakes from sticking together, infuse them with a fragrant aroma, and help preserve them thanks to the phytoncide released from the needles. Our ancestors believed that by receiving the spirit of the pine tree, they could become strong and healthy like the tree itself, and they shaped and ate songpyeon with this wish in mind.

The half-moon shape of songpyeon carries a profound story. During the reign of King Uija of Baekje, an inscription found on a turtle’s shell read, “Baekje is the full moon, Silla is the half moon.” This was interpreted as a prophecy that Baekje would decline while Silla would rise. Indeed, Silla eventually unified the Three Kingdoms, fulfilling the prediction. Inspired by this, our ancestors shaped songpyeon like a half moon, symbolizing a hopeful future of growth and prosperity—just as a half moon gradually becomes full. This symbolism also ties into lunar worship: before being folded, songpyeon resembles a full moon, and once folded, it becomes a half moon—capturing both the transformation and the promise of the moon’s cycle in a single rice cake.]

A Generous Chuseok, Even in the Rain

맑고 청명한 가을 하늘 아래 치러지는 것이 추석의 전형적인 모습이지만, 아쉽게도 이번 추석에는 잔비가 오락가락하며 명절 당일까지도 많은 지역에 비가 예보되어 있다. 궂은 날씨 탓에 야외 성묘나 전통 놀이는 어려울 수 있다.

그러나 날씨가 흐리다고 해서 우리가 전통과 풍요를 향한 마음까지 흐려질 수는 없다. 빗소리를 배경 삼아 온 가족이 마루에 둘러앉아 갓 지은 송편과 따뜻한 전을 나누는 것만으로도 충분히 아름다운 명절이다.

비록 하늘에는 보름달이 뜨지 않을지라도, 우리는 이미 마음속에 가장 크고 넉넉한 만월을 품고 있다.

이렇듯 넉넉한 마음으로 나누는 행복이야말로 진정한 한가위의 가치다. 솔의 정기를 받은 송편처럼 건강하고, 반달처럼 발전하는 미래를 맞이하는 풍성한 추석 명절이 되기를 기원합니다.

[Chuseok is traditionally celebrated under clear and crisp autumn skies, but unfortunately, this year’s holiday is expected to be marked by intermittent showers across many regions, even on the day of the festival. Due to the gloomy weather, outdoor ancestral rites and traditional games may be difficult to enjoy.

However, cloudy skies should never cloud our hearts or dampen our spirit for tradition and abundance. Simply gathering with family on the wooden floor, sharing freshly made songpyeon and warm jeon to the sound of falling rain, can make for a truly beautiful holiday.

Even if the full moon doesn’t appear in the sky, we already carry the fullest and most generous moon within our hearts.
